It is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites of Uttarakhand. Other are: Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Badrinath. The place is dedicated to Ganga; a holy river regarded as a goddess in India. According to Hindu scriptures, King Bhagirath performed meditation to bring Ganga from heaven to Earth to purify the sins of his ancestors. Because of the strong flow rate of Ganga, Lord Shiva caught the river in his hair and gently released the streams to form the tributaries of Ganga, such as Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, Mandakini, which later joined to form River Ganga at Devprayag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gangotri temple built with white granite is located here, and it is dedicated to Goddess Ganga.
