Gangotri

Gangotri offers a serene and spiritually uplifting experience amid the majestic Himalayan landscapes. Pilgrims and travelers should plan their trip with consideration for the weather and local customs to fully appreciate the sanctity of this revered destinatioGangotri, a sacred Hindu town famous for a temple of Ganga in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand state, India. It is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites of Uttarakhand. Other are: Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Badrinath. The place is dedicated to Ganga; a holy river regarded as a goddess in India. According to Hindu scriptures, King Bhagirath performed meditation to bring Ganga from heaven to Earth to purify the sins of his ancestors. Because of the strong flow rate of Ganga, Lord Shiva caught the river in his hair and gently released the streams to form the tributaries of Ganga, such as Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, Mandakini, which later joined to form River Ganga at Devprayag.

The Gangotri temple built with white granite is located here, and it is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Gangotri is located at an elevation of nearly 3100 meters from the sea level in Garhwal Himalayas. It is surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan peaks, dense deodar forest, and glaciers. Gangotri temple built in early 18th century by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa marks the sacred site where Ganga first touched the Earth.
